This class is taught in English.
Students are expected to discuss in groups, present and submit their assignments in English.
It is not necessary to have a high level of English proficiency, but students who are not active and positive to communicate in English may fail in this class.

主題と目標
Globalization has brought us an efficient world where we can travel, live and work wherever we would like to. On the other hand, relation among people has changed and there are many conflicts in many parts of the world due to differences in culture, customs, language and even the way we look. In this class, the students we learn not only theories or what is happening in the world, but they will foster their critical way of seeing the world including Japan by thinking and discussing with their classmates. Nowadays, we use the word "culture" very easily without thinking what it truly means. This class will offer the students the opportunity to think together about "culture" and how it connects and separates people by seeing several cases. At the end, the students would obtain a wide and open way of thinking about other people with different customs, beliefs, language and cultures.

授業計画
The final version of the schedule will be handed during the first class.
The tentative schedule is as follows.
1. Guidance
2. What is "culture"? (from different perspectives)
3. Introduction to Cross-cultural Studies
4. Cross-cultural understanding in different environments
5. Cultural identity and mobility
6. Cross-cultural issues in Japan
7. Non-Japanese children in Japanese public schools
8. Potential solutions for cross-cultural issues in the Japanese society
9. Multicultural societies and their issues
10. Multicultural Education
11. Presentation and discussion (a theme selected by the students)
12. Presentation and discussion (a theme selected by the students)
13. Conclusion and reflection
14. ALH: Intercultural Interaction with a partner university (TBC)
15. ALH: Intercultural Interaction with a partner university (TBC)

As Active Learning Hours, the instructor is thinking of having an interaction session with a partner university in order to learn more from different perspectives. Students are expected to prepare a presentation and be ready for Q&As during ALH. Regarding the dates for ALH, it will be announced in the first class.

[Evaluation]
Final Report 20%
Students need to submit a final report regarding what they learned in this class and what they think is important to improve their society.

Presentation 10%
During class, students will present regarding an appointed topic.

Attitude during the class + Attendance 50%
The attendance and the attitude during the class have the heaviest percentage that decides the student's grade. Do not skip class without a reasonable reason.

ALH: Presentation + Report 20%
ALH's activities are going to be evaluated separate from the regular classes. Do not miss this, otherwise you would not get a good score.

時間外学習
Students are expected to read their materials and prepare their opinions to discuss during the class. Therefore, it is important to take enough time to read the material and prepare their opinions. It is estimated to have more than 90 minutes for the preparation of this class per week.

This class is not a lecture based class. Students are the protagonists in this class, the instructor is just the facilitator giving them advice and information to having a better understanding on what we are learning in this class. International students (including exchange students) are invited to take this class
