Classes will be conducted in lecture format. Although PowerPoint slides will be available over Moodle, students are encouraged to take notes during class. Students will be expected to actively participate in group discussions during class.

主題と目標

This course provides a basis for understanding the ways in which globalization has changed and challenged the conditions under which people around the world engage in labor, whether paid labor in the formal economy or unpaid domestic labor in the home. The course will pay careful attention to the way class, gendered, racial and (neo)colonial power dynamics are inflected in the struggle over working conditions. In addition to providing a broad overview of key issues and debates in relation to the study of globalization and how it impacts the conditions under which people work around the world, this course is intended to provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills and to discuss ideas and opinions with the professor and their peers in English.

第4回	Women, colonialism and labor under the rise of capitalism
第5回	Monopoly capitalism, scientific management and Fordism
第6回	The rise of organized labor, Keynesianism and the male breadwinner system
第7回	The crisis of Keynesianism and the rise of neoliberalism
第8回	Globalization and labor in the Global North: deindustrialization and the rise of precarious labor
第9回	Globalization and labor in the Global South: urbanization, migration and the informal economy
第10回	Globalization and social reproduction: social reproduction in theory
第11回	Globalization and social reproduction: contemporary issues in social reproduction
第12回	Globalization, labor and social movements: alter-globalization and worker mobilization
第13回	Student presentations, discussion and wrap up
第14回	For both ALH Assignments, we will be partnering with students from the University of Victoria in Canada under the COIL Program, discussing about course themes in pairs and small groups and preparing a short presentation together.

時間外学習
Students will be expected to review study notes and/or PowerPoint slides prior to class, making note of any questions they have or ideas that they do not fully understand and come to class ready to ask questions and participate in group discussions. Students will also be expected to prepare a final paper and group presentation due at the end of term on a topic related to course themes.
